Course Description
This doctoral level course aims to develop students’ knowledge and skills regarding academic writing in sociological studies. The course will introduce the underlying principles of logic, argumentation and reasoning in academic writing practices. Specific conventions and technical requirements for quantitative and qualitative research reporting will be discussed and applied in preparation for dissertation writing and the writing of research papers for publication in refereed English journals. Students will also engage with relevant primary and secondary source readings, and conduct critical analysis of exemplary texts.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Identify the principles of academic writing with a particular focus on critical thinking and academic argument for different genres and requirements in sociological studies.
CILO-2: Analyze and evaluate academic texts of various rhetorical modes based on their organization, unity, and content.
CILO-3: Demonstrate proficient control of grammar, sentence variety, word choice, and appropriate conventions in sociological studies.
CILO-4: Apply strategies for writing cohesive academic essays – including the introduction, body paragraph structure, and a conclusion with accurate in-text citations and reference lists in an appropriate referencing system.
