Course Description
This course is designed for four-year undergraduates or first-year master students who have previously taken a basic-level course in social and political thought. It forms the first part of an advanced level course on contemporary political theory. The course examines in details major concepts, such as human nature, individual and society, sovereignty, nation, power, authority, legitimacy, law, order, justice, rights, obligations, citizenzhip, democracy, representation, public interest, globalization, etc., encountered in political analysis. The course takes into account modern development in political theory and the shifting signifcance of rival schools. Students will learn to relate political ideas to political practice.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Interpret recent scholarship on topics such as political participation and decision making, the distinction between the public and the private and the relationship between civil society and democracy at a global level.
CILO-2: Define, critically evaluate and carefully apply key concepts and positions in contemporary political theory.
CILO-3: Engage in a competent, informed, critical as well as respectful manner in current debates about politically relevant issues.
