This course will explore the myths and realities of piracy across the globe and throughout history. After first looking at a number of myths about pirates from movies, novels, and comics, we will then examine the nature and varying definitions of piracy, seeking to differentiate piracy from privateering and other forms of maritime violence. We will also discuss lifestyles and gender issues as they relate to pirates, as well as the impact of piracy on the economy and on state-building. Other themes include the comparison and contrast of piracy in different regional and temporal contexts. Pre-requisite: None.
