Course Description
This course introduces PhD students to the writing of scholarly works through reading, analysis and critique of published academic texts in English linguistics and adjacent fields, including applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, theoretical linguistics and linguistic approaches to translation studies. The course will focus on academic genres of writing as well as the academic discourse and scholarly identity in the publication processes and products.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Show critical awareness of issues of reliability, validity and generalizability.
CILO-2: Practice the intellectual discipline and critical skills necessary for scholarly work in linguistics, including objectivity, respect for and fidelity to sources, awareness of and sensitivity to ethical issues, collegiality and critical thinking.
CILO-3: Develop and use appropriate research writing skills both in the research article and in written interactions with reviewers and editors.
CILO-4: Present a project proposal (or a working paper) intended for publication in an English academic journal in the field.
