Course Description
This course aims to survey a variety of research methods, qualitative and quantitative, that have been employed in current research in English linguistics and adjacent fields, including applied linguistics, sociolinguistics and theoretical linguistics. Using a sample of recently published articles, the instructor will offer a critical examination of the merits and limitations of various methods in relation to the scope and goal of research.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Show critical awareness of various research design and methodological approaches, considering issues of reliability, validity, generalizability and trustworthiness.
CILO-2: Practise the intellectual discipline and critical skills necessary for scholarly work in English linguistics: objectivity, respect for and fidelity to sources, awareness of and sensitivity to ethical issues, collegiality and critical thinking.
CILO-3: Formulate valid and realistic research questions and show readiness to begin a research project.
