Course Description
This course is about the concepts, theories and practice of mathematics teacher development with the purpose of laying a foundation for students’ teaching practice and further studies. Topics include: mathematics teachers’ subject knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge, teachers’ conceptions (or beliefs) of effective mathematics teaching and learning, school-based research and mathematics teachers’ professional development, action research and mathematics teacher development, mathematics teachers’ narratives, case studies of mathematics teacher development, research tendency of mathematics teacher development. Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Define teacher cognitive and non-cognitive concepts, constructs, and theories.
CILO-2: Design and execute research about mathematics teacher characteristics.
CILO-3: Describe the essential components of mathematics teacher preparation and ongoing professional development programs, including an understanding of the skills and knowledge required for effective teaching and learning of mathematics.
CILO-4: Critique different approaches and models of mathematics teacher preparation and professional development, and identify best practices and potential areas for improvement.
CILO-5: Evaluate the impact of different teaching and learning strategies on student outcomes in mathematics, and design effective strategies to enhance student achievement in mathematics.
CILO-6: Develop a reflective practice that includes ongoing self-assessment and professional growth.
