This course examines the traditional Chinese society and economy and their transformation in modern times. Emphasis is placed on the nature of basic socioeconomic structures, social stratification and mobilization, and the interrelationship of the state economy with local society.

CILO-1: Analyze the historical and cultural factors that have influenced China's social and economic development over time. CILO-2: Evaluate the impact of imperialism and foreign trade on China's economy and society. CILO-3: Examine the role of the state in shaping economic policy and development in China. CILO-4: Compare and contrast China's economic development with that of other countries in the region and the world.
