Course Description
This seminar-based course covers a range of material from a variety of theoretical traditions and epistemologies. It introduces students to, and helps them develop an understanding of, complex issues and texts that are the theoretical basis of scholarship in such relevant cognate fields as, communication studies, media studies, cultural studies, gender studies, visual culture, social scientific studies, sociology and psychology. Topics in this course will vary according to course instructor and student interest and may include readings of classical and/or contemporary theories in the social sciences in general, and communication studies in particular.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Identify a set of scholars and concepts that are relevant to the broad topic of communication theory.
CILO-2: Discuss and explain how different theories emerge to address contemporary issues.
CILO-3: Evaluate the connections between various theories and topics of inquiry.
CILO-4: Apply a research theory (or theories) that is appropriate to a topic that the student will explore in their thesis and future academic work.
