Course Description
Architectures, Processes, Communication, Naming, Consistency and Replication, System support for Large Language Models, Cloud service models, and other topics. It is a senior-level elective course on distributed systems for computer and information science. Research papers in areas of distributed systems will be given for supplementary reading.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Recognize core architectures, models, and challenges of cloud and distributed systems, including: Service models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, Serverless), Consistency tradeoffs (CAP theorem, eventual consistency), and Distributed coordination (e.g., Raft, Paxos).
CILO-2: Analyze cloud resource management using real-world platforms like AWS, Kubernetes, or Azure to optimize Compute (virtual machines, containers), Storage (object storage, distributed databases), and Networking (CDNs, load balancing).
CILO-3: Design scalable and fault-tolerant systems by applying principles such as: Microservices architecture and Auto-scaling and redundancy.
CILO-4: Evaluate performance, cost, and sustainability of cloud systems and integrate emerging trends like: Edge computing and Distributed machine learning.
