Course Description
In this course the students will learn the basic terminology, vocabulary and techniques for translating texts in the arts, primarily in music, painting and films.
Students will be required to translate either (i) programme notes of recitals and concerts, and TV/Radio talks on music; or (ii) catalogues of exhibitions and museum collections of items of arts and antiques; or (iii) films.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Describe features of different genres relating to arts, e.g., music, film and painting.
CILO-2: Employ a range of translation techniques for rendering different genres concerned.
CILO-3: Critically evaluate art translations by drawing on relevant theoretical frameworks.
CILO-4: Apply tools that assist in the decision of the most appropriate method and linguistic/stylistic strategies for different translation proposals through critical reading of Translation Studies (TS) articles and seminal texts, critical reading of bilingual texts (literary and non-literary texts), translation practices and group discussions.
