Course Description
This course aims at learning from good examples that, nevertheless, can be treated critically. This course will cover a variety of texts and genres, and above all, it aims at learning from master translators and focuses on the study of translation classics from the Chinese and the Portuguese into English and vice versa.
This course will focus on the study of selected works of translation and study the various aspects of translation, from the linguistic and stylistic to the cultural and ideological. It will also discuss the various challenges of translating between Chinese and Portuguese. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to analyze and discuss a variety of texts and genres. In addition to the study of good examples of translations, students will also be asked to take a critical approach to the translations they are studying. In addition, The course will also include theoretical discussions on translation and its challenges, as well as hands-on activities to put the theoretical knowledge into practice.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Demonstrate critical appreciation of best known translations throughout the history of Chinese-English, Portuguese-Chinese or Portuguese-English translation.
CILO-2: Recognize and evaluate good translations, identify the challenges of translating between Chinese-English, Portuguese-Chinese or Portuguese-English, and be able to apply translation theories and techniques in their own translations.
CILO-3: Compare the translation to the original to determine if it effectively conveys the same message.
